I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Totem Cirque Du Soleil show last week at the Boston Marine Industrial Park. The show was…jaw-dropping-unbelievable-mind shattering-amazing. Like I’m ready to quit my job to train to become an acrobat! The way they moved, their gracefulness, their dedication, their balance. While staying calm they displayed an incredible sense of balance as they flipped here and there and walked juggled numerous hula hoops. I was in awe.
The show got me thinking about how I find balance in my life. Is it possible? Will I ever attain it? I’ve been really hoping my zodiac sign would kick in and give me some balance….still waiting. When I graduated college last Fall I was sure that life would slow down, allowing me to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I wasn’t ready for it to speed up. Suddenly I was trying to play catch up from months crammed at home studying and writing papers. I was ready to sky rocket my career and re-haul my blog, I was going – fast, and haven’t stopped. Every now and again I get envious of friends who are out and about to this party and that, sipping fruity cocktails, jet-setting to here and there posting every step of their journey on instagram. I learned a long time ago that wouldn’t be my life, and instead I find smaller ways to try and breathe and take care of me.
Seven years into being a parent and I am starting to unfold the story behind taking care of yourself. It’s incredibly difficult to manage all the various responsibilities in my life without a strong village behind me. So instead I take quick breaks to gain some stability and balance, often times including my daughter. Last weekend we had an impromptu dance party once the sun went down. Instant stress reliever. On Monday I started reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed. Mood relaxer. It’s about finding something that works for you and your time, and doesn’t have to be extravagant. I’m most relaxed when I’m home, with my hair up, in some comfy clothes, with a clean face. Yes, that is my idea of a good time. And yes, I’m 26!
How do you keep balance in an otherwise unbalanced world?
